1983 Apple prototype pictures show iPhone ancestor (Digital Trends)

phone 2Here?s a nice little bit of Apple trivia for you. Apple?s first touchscreen technically wasn?t the 2007 launched iPhone. The company had apparently designed a prototype of a touchscreen?landline phone back in the 1980s.

It?s an interesting look into the early game plan which eventually gave birth to the iPhone. The all-white stationary device?s point of origin seems to be 1983. It features a stylus to interact with the built-in screen, and one of the pictures shows off some sort of accounting and check-writing application; possibly using a modem to pay bills.

The phone prototype never made it into production, but it was supposedly designed by Harmtut Esslinger. The German-American Esslinger is the guy behind the Apple IIc, which was the company?s first push towards a portable computer. The 1983 touchscreen phone definitely has some of the Apple design elements from that period. Hartmut Esslinger later went on to found a company called Frogdesign.apple phone prototype

Mashable points out that this actually isn?t the first time these pictures have been passed around the Internet. However, interest in the old prototypes has been renewed thanks to a peek at the Stanford University stockpile of Apple documents, which had previously been locked away. These archives were donated to Stanford back in 1997 when Jobs returned to the company after being forced out.

Apparently there are a large number of prototype?s squirreled away, some resembling Apple?s current products. There?s even a device that looks like a tablet. It would be great to see a museum documenting the trail of Apple?s cast-off ideas, given the company?s philosophy of simplicity. Hopefully Stanford opens up the collection to the public at some point.

Video: GOP candidates trade shots

>>> the republicans are descending on their stake for pitching to voters in iowa . peter alexander is there. good morning.

>> reporter: good morning. mitt romney the former governor of massachusetts will begin his day with a breakfast meet and greet. consider this statistic. a recent poll shows nearly 40% of likely republican caucus goers in iowa are not firmly set on a candidate which is why what happens here next tuesday is largely unpredictable and why the presidential candidates are once again crisscrossing the state. arriving in iowa late tuesday before a standing room only crowd, mitt romney ignored his republican rivals. instead launching a fierce attack on president barack obama .

>> gone is the hope and change candidate of davenport. gone is the candidate who would heal the nation.

>> reporter: earlier tuesday in new hampshire, romney mocked newt gingrich for his failure to get on the ballot in gingrich 's home state of vrnl.

>> virginia.

>> i think he compared that to what, pearl harbor ? it's more like lucille ball at the chocolate factory . i mean, you got to get it organized. despite romney 's efforts to act like the presumptive nominee the race in iowa remains wide open .

>> what the people of iowa want is an inspiring candidate. they want somebody who can get them enthusiastic, who can get them engaged.

>> reporter: since this summer, seven different republicans have led in the polls here. one of the recent gop front-runners, gingrich , the former house speaker , now appears to be losing momentum, in part due to a bare-fisted blitz of negative ads targeting his congressional record . to combat that assault, gingrich 's supporters launched their own new ad tuesday.

>> when a principal conservative took the lead they attacked him with falsehoods.

>> reporter: still another sign of trouble, conflicting stories with the end of his first marriage. on his campaign website gingrich claims his first wife asked for the divorce but court documents suggest gingrich himself requested the split. romney was also on the defensive tuesday trying to shake his moderate record, as conservatives attacked him on the issue of abortion, launching a new text message campaign, citing his past pro-choice views. and with ron paul demonstrating steady support, the biggest battle here may be over which candidate comes the conservative choice.

>> of all of the candidates that are running i am the one with the unassailable proven track record of a clear 100% consistent conservative.

>> reporter: michele bachmann , rick santorum and rick perry , stumping tuesday with controversial sher imjoe arpaio are all vying to earn that title. the slugfest continued into the night with mitt romney being attacked by newt gingrich who called him a big government moderate. newt gingrich also attacked ron paul saying he couldn't vote for paul if he became the romney . "his views totally outside the main stream of every decent american."

Court OKs immunity for telecoms (Politico)

SAN FRANCISCO ? A U.S. appeals court on Thursday said a 2008 law granting telecommunications companies legal immunity for helping the National Security Agency with an email and telephone eavesdropping program is constitutional.

The case had consolidated 33 lawsuits filed against various telecom companies on behalf of customers that accused the companies of violating the law and customers? privacy by collaborating with the NSA on intelligence gathering thorugh the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, or FISA.

The case is related to surveillance rules passed by Congress in 2008 that included protection from legal liability for telecommunications companies that allegedly helped the U.S. spy on Americans without warrants.

?I?m very disappointed,? said Cindy Cohn, legal director of the San Francisco-based Electronic Frontier Foundation, who argued the case before the three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. ?I think what Congress did was an abdication of its duty to protect people from illegal surveillance.?

In a separate opinion on Thursday, a three-judge panel of the court revived two other lawsuits that seek redress for telecom customers whose information may have been compromised by the warrantless surveillance program.

In its unanimous ruling, the court noted comments made by the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence regarding the legal immunity?s role in helping the government gather intelligence.

?It emphasized that electronic intelligence gathering depends in great part on cooperation from private companies ? and that if litigation were allowed to proceed against persons allegedly assisting in such activities, ?the private sector might be unwilling to cooperate with lawful government requests in the future,?? Judge M. Margaret McKeown said.

Two groups of telecom customers had sued the NSA for violating their privacy by collecting Internet data from telecom companies in the surveillance program authorized by former President George W. Bush.

Government lawyers have moved to stop such cases, arguing that defending the program in court would jeopardize national security.

The suits will be sent back to U.S. District Court in San Francisco.

Emails seeking comment from the U.S. Department of Justice weren?t immediately returned.

Women with celiac disease suffer from depression, disordered eating, study finds

ScienceDaily (Dec. 27, 2011) ? Women with celiac disease -- an autoimmune disorder associated with a negative reaction to eating gluten -- are more likely than the general population to report symptoms of depression and disordered eating, even when they adhere to a gluten-free diet, according to researchers at Penn State, Syracuse University and Drexel University.

People with celiac disease often suffer from abdominal pain, constipation, decreased appetite, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting in response to ingesting gluten. The disease affects somewhere between one in 105 to one in 1,750 people in the United States and is typically controlled by avoiding gluten-containing foods such as those made with wheat, barley and rye.

"It is easy to see how people who are not managing their disease well can frequently feel unwell and, therefore, be more stressed and have higher rates of depression," said Josh Smyth, professor of biobehavioral health and medicine, Penn State, "But researchers had not carefully looked at whether people who are effectively managing celiac disease exhibit a greater risk for such difficulties."

Smyth and his colleagues used a Web-mediated survey to assess a range of physical, behavioral and emotional experiences in 177 American women over the age of 18 who reported a physician-provided diagnosis of celiac disease. The survey questions explored respondents' levels of adherence to a gluten-free diet and assessed various symptoms of celiac disease, how physical symptoms interfere with functioning, the respondents' experience and management of stressful situations, symptoms of clinical depression, and frequency of negative thoughts and behaviors associated with eating and body image.

The results are posted online and will appear in a future issue of Chronic Illness.

"We found that most participants frequently adhered to a gluten-free diet, and this greater compliance with diet was related to increased vitality, lower stress, decreased depressive symptoms and greater overall emotional health," said Smyth. "However, even those people who were managing their illness very well reported higher rates of stress, depression and a range of issues clustered around body dissatisfaction, weight and shape when compared to the general population."

Smyth noted that he and his colleagues did not survey people without celiac disease; rather, they compared their results to those previously determined for the non-celiac population.

It is understandable to find that women with celiac disease tend to suffer from what is typically characterized as disordered eating, given that the focus of celiac-disease management is to pay careful attention to what and how one eats, said Smyth.

"What we don't know is what leads to what and under what circumstances," he said. "It's likely that the disease, stress, weight, shape and eating issues, and depression are interconnected. But we don't know if women with both higher stress and have celiac disease are more likely to develop symptoms of disordered eating and then become depressed, or if women with celiac disease are depressed and then become stressed, which leads to disordered eating. In the future, we plan to investigate the temporal sequence of these symptoms."

The team's results may have implications for people with food allergies, diabetes and Crohn's disease, a form of inflammatory bowel disease, as well as celiac disease, according to Smyth.

"Going out to eat with friends or to a holiday potluck is a much different experience for these people because they have to be vigilant and monitor their diets," he said. "They may feel that they are a burden on a host or hostess. In many cases the only treatment option they are given is to manage their diets. I think we need to educate patients at diagnosis or post-diagnosis about some of the other associated difficulties they might experience and provide strategies for how to better manage those things. I am a proponent of elaborating our treatment models to not just address diseases, but also to address the psychological, social and behavioral aspects of disease as well, as they can influence disease outcomes and the well being of patients."

Other researchers on this project include Danielle Arigo, graduate student, Syracuse University, and Alicia Anskis, graduate student, Drexel University.

Switched On: The Year of Reversal

Each week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On, a column about consumer technology.

Back in 2005, Switched On dubbed its first full year of existence "The Year of the Switch" as IBM sold its PC business to Lenovo, Apple announced plans to leave the PowerPC platform for Macs and Microsoft moved to PowerPC processors for the XBox 360. But the dramatic reversals we saw in 2011 made even some of those decisions look tame by comparison.

Cops: Man who killed 6 relatives wore Santa outfit

The man believed to have killed six relatives and then himself on Christmas Day was dressed as Santa Claus, police said Monday.

The shooter "showed up shortly before the incident took place" in the Santa outfit and was a member of the family opening gifts in the apartment in this Dallas suburb, said Grapevine police spokesman Sgt. Robert Eberling.

Late Sunday evening, police intently searched a sport utility vehicle parked outside the apartment. The vehicle is registered to a man who listed his residence as a home two miles away in the neighboring suburb of Colleyville.

Thomas Ehrlich, who lives near the home in Colleyville, told the AP he heard from neighbors that police went to the house Sunday. He said it was his understanding that the man and women who once lived there were estranged.

Records show the couple had financial problems and that their home, most recently valued on the county tax rolls at $336,200, had been sold in 2010 at a foreclosure auction.

Eberling said the identity of the man and the victims would be released after autopsies are conducted and relatives were notified.

The dead ? four women and three men ? were found late Sunday morning in an apartment living room in Grapevine by police answering a voiceless 911 call.

Two pistols were recovered from the home, said Eberling, who called it a "gruesome crime scene" and the worst outburst of gun violence in the town's history.

No one was found alive by police arriving at the home, he said.

A community of about 46,000 people some 20 miles northwest of downtown Dallas, Grapevine is known for its wine-tasting salons and was recently proclaimed by the state Senate as the "Christmas Capital of Texas" for its abundance of annual holiday-season events.

"This is obviously a terrible tragedy," said Mayor William Tate. "The fact that it happened on Christmas makes it even more tragic."

The victims' ages were 15, 19, 22, 55, 56, 58 and 59, said Grapevine police Lt. Todd Dearing. The victims in their 50s were two couples.

Voiceless 911 call
Police dispatched at about 11:30 a.m. local time on Sunday found the bodies in the first-floor living room of a two-story unit in the Lincoln Vineyards apartments.

The 911 caller never spoke to police, and officers did not see the telephone when they arrived, officials said. Eberling said he believed police had to kick in the door to enter.

Many of the nearby apartments are vacant, and police said no neighbors reported hearing anything on a quiet Christmas morning when many people were not around.

Eberling said the victims appeared to have just opened Christmas presents when the shooting started, and there was no visible sign of forced entry or a struggle.

"By all appearances, they're all part of the same family," Eberling said. "It's a gruesome crime scene to say the least, with that many victims in that (small an) area suffering gunshot wounds."

The bodies remained in the apartment well past dark as investigators worked into the early hours of Monday morning processing the crime scene, police said.

Lincoln Vineyards is a middle-income complex near Colleyville Heritage High School, one of the area's most highly regarded schools.

Several neighbors said children frequently played in front of the apartment, and they regularly saw young adults leaving for work.

Vanessa Barerra said the killings were especially disturbing in light of Grapevine's reputation as a safe place to live.

"I did research and chose to live here because of the safety and the school district," she said. "I'm glad my kids weren't here. They're with their dad."

Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Samsung launches two dual-sim Galaxy Y phones for carrier cheaters

Samsung is rolling out a pair of dual-SIM blowers for everyone who wants to keep their working and private lives separate, or take advantage of constantly changing carrier deals. The Galaxy Y Duos packs a 3.14-inch QVGA (243 x 320) touchscreen, HSDPA modem, three megapixel camera, microSD storage that's expandable up to 32GB and an 832MHz processor that runs TouchWiz flavored Gingerbread. The Galaxy Y Pro Duos' only difference is its smaller 2.6-inch LQVGA TFT screen, to make space for the physical keyboard below. Both models will be available from January in Europe, Russia, Latin America, Asia, Africa and China and while there's no word on pricing, the specs suggest it won't be high. Head on past the break for the deep dish (or as some squares like to call it, "press release").

UK economic growth revised up to 0.6 pct in Q3 (AP)

LONDON ? Britain's economy grew by a slightly better than anticipated 0.6 percent in the third quarter, after unexpectedly stalling in the previous three month period, official figures showed Thursday.

The 0.1 percent upward revision to the third quarter growth was offset by an equivalent reduction to the previous quarter to show no growth at all.

The Office for National Statistics said the upward revision was largely due to agriculture, construction and services performing better than estimated. Those sectors outweighed the impact of a faltering industrial sector.

The third quarter rise was the highest since the third quarter of 2010, when the British economy also grew by 0.6 percent but analysts aren't getting too carried away.

Britain's economy remains threatened by the debt crisis in Europe, rising unemployment and weak domestic growth, and the Bank of England has forecast little or no growth over the next few quarters.

"The underlying trend is very clearly one of an economy that is struggling in the face of what seems to be an ever-growing list of headwinds," said Chris Williamson, chief economist at financial services information company Markit.

The Conservative-led government has staked its reputation on a strategy of cutting costs and jobs in the public sector while trying to boost private sector growth. Britain's unemployment rate is now 8.3 percent, up 0.4 percent on the quarter and at its highest level since 1996.

Influential credit ratings agency Moody's warned this week that the U.K.'s cherished triple A credit rating is at risk from both a weak domestic economy and the financial crisis in the eurozone. It warned that the country's deficit "has eroded its ability to absorb further macroeconomic or fiscal shocks without rating implications."

A deal with Sony gives Amazon’s LoveFilm more shows to stream

Amazon bought the U.K.-based video rental and streaming firm nearly a year ago.

Lead Photo

Amazon.com Inc. today said it had expanded the streaming content available to members of its U.K.-based LoveFilm International Ltd. via a deal with Sony Pictures Television. The multiyear deal gives LoveFilm members exclusive streaming access to Sony movies and television shows. Amazon did not disclose detailed terms.

Amazon is No. 1 in Internet Retailer?s Top 300 Europe Guide. Amazon announced its acquisition of LoveFilm in January after holding a 40% stake in the company since 2008. LoveFilm has more than 1.8 million subscribers in the United Kingdom, Germany, Sweden, Demark and Norway.

The Sony deal follows similar LoveFilm agreements with Warner Bros., Entertainment One, StudioCanal, Disney, Momentum and Lionsgate. LoveFilm members can watch the streamed content on approximately 175 devices including PCs, Sony PlayStation, Microsoft Xbox 360, Apple iPad, Internet-connected TV sets and Blu-ray players.

?The number of recent high-profile deals we have secured means we are able to keep expanding the service, offering our members high-quality films and TV and the ability to watch as much as they want for one low monthly price,? says Simon Calver, chief executive of LoveFilm, whose monthly fees start at about $7.80. In total, LoveFilm offers access to some 70,000 titles.

Since acquiring LoveFilm, Amazon has promoted its Amazon Prime free shipping service by expanding the streaming content available to consumers who sign up. And earlier this month, Microsoft Corp. said that consumers using its Xbox 360 game console will be able to stream videos from LoveFilm.

Prosecutor injured in Minn. courthouse shooting (AP)

GRAND MARAIS, Minn. ? A gunman opened fire in a small northern Minnesota courthouse on Thursday, wounding the local prosecutor and two other people, authorities said.

The shootings began around 4 p.m. at the Cook County Courthouse in Grand Marais, a remote town near the Canadian border, and a suspect was quickly taken into custody, State Public Safety spokesman Doug Neville said. The agency later identified the suspect as 42-year-old Daniel Schlienz, who had been on trial earlier Thursday on sexual misconduct charges. Schlienz was being held in the county jail.

Cook County prosecutor Timothy Scannell was undergoing surgery for multiple gunshot wounds Thursday night at Essentia Health-St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth, spokeswoman Beth Johnson said. Scannell and another hospitalized victim were conscious and talking before being taken to the hospital, while the third victim was treated and released, Neville said.

A county official said the courthouse doesn't have metal detectors and visitors aren't usually searched.

Scannell was handling the only case on Thursday's court calendar, a jury trial that began Monday for Schlienz, who had been charged with criminal sexual conduct and nonconsensual sex contact.

Schlienz's father told the Duluth News Tribune that he went to the courthouse and was told that his son was the shooter. He said his son had recently threatened suicide.

"He hated the prosecuting attorney that did this," Gary Schlienz told the newspaper. "I don't want to make excuses for him, but they prosecuted him pretty bad. He had no job, no money, nothing."

Phone messages left at both of the men's homes by The Associated Press were not returned.

Online state court records listed several cases involving Daniel Schlienz in the past two decades, but most were minor traffic cases. More serious charges included fleeing a peace officer and the criminal sexual conduct case, which was first filed in 2006.

The Duluth News Tribune reported that Schlienz had entered an Alford plea in that case in 2007 on charges that he sexually assaulted two 15-year-old girls and one 17-year-old girl. His father told the newspaper that his son later decided to withdraw the plea and fight the charges.

The county's two-story courthouse, which has just one courtroom, has no metal detectors and visitors aren't searched when they enter the building, Cook County Commissioner Fritz Sobanja said.

"As far as I know, there's no checking for knives or any of that stuff," Sobanja said.

Grand Marais, home to about 1,300 residents, is about 110 miles northeast of Duluth and sits along the shore of Lake Superior in Minnesota's far northeastern tip.

Summary Box: Stocks edge higher on good jobs data (AP)

THE DOW: The Dow Jones industrial average broke a three-day losing streak on news that unemployment claims fell last week to their lowest level in 3 1/2 years. The New York and Philadelphia branches of the Federal Reserve reported strong increases in regional manufacturing.

FOCUS SHIFTS TO U.S.: Investors had sent the Dow down 360 points in the previous three days over fears about the European debt crisis. On Thursday they shifted their focus to the improving U.S. economy.

FEDEX DELIVERS: The cargo carrier soared 8 percent after reporting that its income nearly doubled on higher online retail sales. FedEx is considered a barometer of the economy; if people are shipping more, they're probably shopping more, too.

Asia stocks down as Fed holds off on new stimulus (AP)

BANGKOK ? Asian stocks fell Wednesday after the Federal Reserve refrained from offering new initiatives to help a slowly recovering U.S. economy.

Benchmark oil hovered below $100 per barrel while the dollar rose against the euro but slipped against the yen.

Japan's Nikkei 225 index fell 0.8 percent to 8,787.68. South Korea's Kospi lost 0.4 percent at 1,856.46 and Hong Kong's Hang Seng shed 0.2 percent to 18,413.79. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 rose less than 0.1 percent to 4,196.40.

Benchmarks in mainland China, Singapore and Indonesia fell while Taiwan, India and the Philippines rose.

U.S. stocks gave up gains Tuesday after the Fed released a policy statement that made clear it was not offering any new steps to help the economy.

The Fed said that the U.S. economy, while improving, is still weak. Unemployment remains high, and it remains vulnerable to the European debt crisis, which could push the continent into a recession and slow U.S. growth.

Analysts said markets were disappointed that the Fed refrained from a third round of large-scale purchases of Treasury securities, dubbed quantitative easing III or QE3.

"I think QE3 would be a welcome change to the status quo. I think the market was disappointed," said Francis Lun, managing director of Lyncean Holdings in Hong Kong.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 0.6 percent to close at 11,954.94. The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 0.9 percent to 1,225.73. The Nasdaq composite fell 1.3 percent to 2,579.27.

The Dow dropped more than 70 points in the last hour of trading and had risen as high as 126 points earlier Tuesday after two strong auctions of European debt. The Spanish government was able to sell short-term debt at much lower interest rates compared with a month ago, a signal that markets are becoming less fearful about the government's ability to repay its debt.

And in its first sale of short-term bills, the European Financial Stability Fund raised 1.9 billion euros ($2.6 billion).

Still, investor sentiment remained fragile amid threats by Standard & Poor's to downgrade the credit ratings of 15 countries that use the euro because of the region's debt crisis.

"We are likely to continue seeing some cautious trading as the threat of S&P coming out to issue some downgrades at some stage this week looms," said Stan Shamu of IG Markets in Melbourne, Australia.

"Some would argue that this is already priced in, but it will still likely rock the boat should it happen."

Export shares in Japan were under pressure as the yen strengthened against a shaky euro. Sharp Corp. dropped 3 percent while Toshiba Corp. lost 1.7 percent. Honda Motor Corp. slid 2.6 percent.

Chinese property shares dropped after the government signaled that it would maintain price curbs on real estate.

"The government has set a clear tone for reining in runaway housing prices next year," Wang Yulin of the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development was quoted as saying by Xinhua news agency.

Hong Kong-listed China Vanke Co. fell 1.4 percent and Evergrande Real Estate Group dived 3.3 percent.

Australia's Westpac Banking Corp. was down 0.2 percent after the bank warned that net interest margins, and revenues in its markets business, were being impacted by Europe's debt crisis.

Benchmark oil for January delivery was down 23 cents to $99.91 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose $2.37 to finish at $100.14 an ounce on the Nymex on Tuesday.

In currencies, the euro fell to $1.3034 from $1.3043 late Tuesday in New York. The dollar fell to 77.95 yen from 77.97 yen.

Thousands of birds make crash landing in Utah

Officials say stormy conditions probably confused the flock of eared grebes, a duck-like aquatic?bird?likely making its way to the Mexican coast for the winter.

Thousands of migratory?birds?were killed or injured after apparently mistaking a Wal-Mart parking lot, football fields and other snow-covered areas of southern?Utah?for bodies of water and plummeting to the ground in what one state wildlife expert called the worst mass?bird?crash she'd ever seen.

Crews went to work cleaning up the dead?birds?and rescuing the injured survivors after the creatures crash-landed in the St. George area Monday night.

By midday Wednesday, volunteers had helped rescue more than 3,000?birds, releasing them into a nearby pond. There's no count on how many died, although officials estimate it's upwards of 1,500.

"They're just everywhere," said Teresa Griffin, wildlife program manager for the?Utah?Division of Wildlife Resource's southern region. "It's been nonstop. All our employees are driving around picking them up, and we've got so many people coming to our office and dropping them off."

No human injuries or property damage have been reported.

Officials say stormy conditions probably confused the flock of eared grebes, a duck-like aquatic?bird?likely making its way to the Mexican coast for the winter.

The?birds?plunged into a Cedar City Wal-Mart parking lot, football fields, highways and over miles of property that had been blanketed by about 3 inches of gleaming snow.

"The storm clouds over the top of the city lights made it look like a nice, flat body of water. All the conditions were right," Griffin told The Spectrum newspaper in St. George (http://bit.ly/rYpQbJ). "So the?birds?landed to rest, but ended up slamming into the pavement."

Kevin McGowan, who studies?birds?at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology in Ithaca, N.Y., said grebes rely on starlight to navigate during their nighttime migration.

"Before there were (artificial lights), the sky was always paler than the ground," he told The Associated Press. "When all of a sudden there's light all over the place, they don't know which way is up anymore."

McGowan said it's not uncommon for?birds?to crash en masse, especially if they confuse the ground for water.

A high-profile crash in Arkansas in January killed about 4,500?birds, mainly red-winged blackbirds. The National Wildlife Heath Center concluded the?birds?were startled by loud noises in the area, including celebratory fireworks on New Year's Eve, and crashed amid their poor night-vision.

More than 175 mass death events, in which more than 1,000?birds?died, have been reported to the National Wildlife Heath Center in the past 10 years. Causes for those die-offs included disease, weather, poisoning, trauma and starvation.

But Griffin said the?Utah?downing was notable among the ones she's seen because it was so widespread. Downed flocks were reported all over Cedar City, and as far as 30 miles south.

"I've been here 15 years, and this was the worst downing I've seen," she told the newspaper.

Wildlife officials said they were continuing the rescue effort that started Tuesday afternoon and included residents collecting grebes ? which weigh about a pound ? and delivering them in cardboard boxes to the wildlife department's office.

Officers said once they dropped the?birds?into bodies of water in southern?Utah's?Washington County, including a pond near Hurricane, the water-loving creatures were "very active."

Many of the?birds?had broken wings or other injuries from the accident. Wildlife agency spokesman Lynn Chamberlain said the?birds' hollow bones can heal, although humans can't do much to help the process.

Keeping them in water ? where they have food and won't have to fly ? improves their chances.

"We're giving them the best shot they can," Chamberlain said. "The likelihood is that most of them will survive."
