You, Astrology And The Birth Chart - SubmitYOURArticle.com

Although your Birth Chart is all about 'You', your life and evolution and let's face it everything begins with self. There is nothing wrong with this, as it is part of our process and progress. The natural zodiac begins with Aries, which is a very 'Me' sign. We all need to develop deeper insight into ourselves. Having a deeper understanding will promote harmony with our inner self. This is what our Birth Chart is all about.

We receive more than we bargained for!

For those who begin to work with their chart in earnest and in so doing begin to appreciate the wisdom of astrology; you gain a great deal more than what you signed up for. You develop a connection to the spirit of life, its meaning and the Universe. We are actually like dumb notes, until we tune into our source, then life begins to sparkle.

We can only speak from our own experience, but I have witnessed this happening to others as they make the connection back to their core self. Becoming aware of our core self and learning to operate from it is just one of the gifts of astrology. There is however, much more.

Example:

Looking back on my own experience, I always had a fascination with astrology. When young, I perceived it as a way of looking into the future. In my naivety and being a Sagittarius Sun, I believed in a rosy future and my chart would tell me wonderful things, ha! With this type of Sun however, at a deeper level I always wondered what life was really about. What's the point, I often thought, to life as we all die. Questioning my parents about this, my mum's reply was 'you live again through your children'. Even at my young age I knew I never wanted children and maybe this, plus with both a fascination and fear of death my quest for understanding life stirred within me.

The nearest I came to astrology was reading my stars in the magazines, until at the age of 42, (which can often be a turning point to one's life); I decided to learn more about the subject. This was indicated in my chart, but that's another story! Still wearing my rose coloured glasses and believing in a better future, I began my quest.

This is the Point!

I may have begun my journey with naivety and of course my Sagittarius optimism, but what it actually did was to quench my inner search for deeper reasons and understanding about life. It not only connected me to my source, my core self, I began to feel connected to the universe. I remember thinking; gosh there is a vast intelligence behind all this. You can only appreciate astrology's true value if you study it in depth. Anyone who does so cannot deny its wisdom and ability to connect you to all life and its different dimensions. In perceiving a bigger picture you come to realise that there is no such thing as a separated 'I', as we are all indeed connected not just to each other but to the whole Universe.

The real gem of astrology is learning about it through your own Chart. Here, two things are happening simultaneously. Through your Birth Chart you are becoming aware of your inner self, which is the director of your outer circumstances and life. This eventually will connect you back to your core self. You are also learning the language of astrology, which clearly shows the dynamic energy of life. The more you delve into this fascinating subject the more you begin to see the sequence and connection to all of life.

In essence you are learning about yourself and what better subject can one study!!! In so doing you are absorbing astrology which stretches your consciousness, giving you further insights not just into yourself but the whole of life. This broadens your awareness and adds greater meaning to life. This of course does not take away all your troubles and challenges, but boy can you face and deal with them far better from the depth of understanding and higher perspective you now have on life.

Lucinda Tinsley as been studying Astrology for over 20 years. Her website www.lucindatinsley.com covers many aspects of this subject as she tries to bring astrology down to earth. Using the psychological approach she helps you to understand your unique Birth Chart. Giving you greater insights into yourself and your life.

Afghan governance: more Judge Dredd than Jefferson

More than a decade into the US-led war in Afghanistan, local strongmen still undermine US and NATO efforts to establish a strong democratic culture in Kandahar.

By Tom A. Peter,?Correspondent / July 31, 2012

Nearly 11 years into the American-led war, local strongmen often still have more influence than government institutions in Afghanistan, undermining US and NATO efforts to establish a strong democratic culture here.

Rather than seek the help of their local parliamentarian or governor, many Afghans turn instead to?individual figures acting alone and outside the framework of the law. In Afghanistan's south, this paradigm has traditionally created problems. There, provincial police chief Gen. Abdul Raziq has managed to become one of the most influential figures in Kandahar Province, despite credible rumors of involvement with extrajudicial killings, torture, and drug smuggling.

For Western observers who hoped to see Afghanistan adopt a more democratic and transparent government that would move away from strongmen and their parallel governments, the rise of a figure like General Raziq is concerning. Still, many Afghans see him as necessary to bring peace in the short term and an unavoidable stepping stone to a new class of leaders who live by the law, not by the gun.

?Given the current situation and the people who are fighting against Afghanistan and our people, I think Raziq should be aggressive,? says Haji Fazal Mohammad, district governor of Kandahar?s Panjwayi district, a former Taliban stronghold that has seen substantial improvements over the past year.

?If the Taliban were thinking about human values, then it would not be good to be aggressive with them, but they are against all human values, and they are trying to destroy our country and our security institutions, and they are against reforms in our country,??

The need for an effective police command became clear in April of last year when a suicide bomber managed to infiltrate police headquarters in?Kandahar?and killed then police chief Gen. Khan Mohammad Mujahid. Raziq, who was commander of the border police in?Kandahar?s Spin Boldak district at the time and a close ally of the US, was brought in to replace him.

About three months later, Ahmad Wali?Karzai, half-brother to the president, was gunned down by someone from his inner circle.

Enter Judge Dredd

Having overshadowed most government institutions, Mr. Karzai's death created a power vacuum that many feared could cause Kandahar to fall into a downward spiral. Some Kandaharis hoped that his death might pave the way for the government, rather than another strongman, to regain control of political life in the south.?

Home values rise for the first time in five years ? CNNMoney

home prices.gi.top Home values rise for the first time in five years CNNMoney

Home prices nationwide have hit a bottom, and home values are finally on the rise.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) ? Home prices hit a bottom and are finally bouncing back, according to an industry report released Tuesday.

Nationwide, home values rose 0.2% year-over-year to a median $149,300 during the second quarter, the first annual increase since 2007, real estate listing site Zillow reported. Prices were up 2.1% from the first quarter.

Even though June marked the fourth consecutive month of home value increases, overall home prices are still down almost 24% since April 2007, when Zillow began to track home values.

?[I]t seems clear that the country has hit a bottom in home values,? said Zillow?s chief economist Stan Humphries. ?The housing recovery is holding together despite lower-than-expected job growth, indicating that it has some organic strength of its own.?

Last winter, Zillow projected that the housing market turnaround would not arrive until the end of the year.

Other home price indexes have also recorded gains lately, including the S&P/Case-Shiller home price index. In it latest release, it reported that home prices in 20 major markets rose 1.3% in April, the first monthly increase in seven months.

Zillow uses a different methodology in calculating home values than other home price indexes like Case-Shiller and the Federal Housing Finance Agency. Sales of foreclosed, bank-owned properties, for example, are not factored into Zillow?s data. Zillow does include short sales, however, which are more difficult to distinguish from conventional sales.

?Our index is geared to consumers, conventional sellers deciding whether they want to put their homes on the market,? said Humphries.

The indexes that include foreclosures in their market data show larger price declines. The peak-to-trough drop for the S&P/Case-Shiller home price index, for example, is about 34% compared with Zillow?s 24%.

Fewer than one third of the 167 metro areas Zillow surveyed recorded annual increases in home values, but the size of the price gains in these areas more than offset the losses posted by the remaining two-thirds of the markets.

In Phoenix, the biggest gainer, home values soared 12.1% year-over-year to a median of $136,200. Meanwhile, the biggest loss sustained by any of the 30 largest metro areas was in Chicago where median home values fell 5.8% to $158,600.

Foreclosures remain one of the biggest risks to the housing market recovery, Humphries said. In the wake of the national foreclosure settlement which clarified how banks can legally pursue foreclosures, Humphries expects the pace of foreclosures to pick up.

?That will translate to more homes on the market,? he said. ?But we think demand will rise to absorb that.?

Zillow expects the housing market to continue to slowly recover, with median home values projected to climb 1.1% ? relatively flat ? over the next 12 months.

Beaten down markets like Phoenix, Las Vegas and many Florida cities, will likely record greater-than-average gains over the next 12 months, said Humphries.

The results in those places, however, will be bumpy. Home price increases will cause some homeowners who have been patiently waiting for values to rebound to put their homes on the market. And those additional listings could cool prices for a while, resulting in a staircase effect with ?price spikes followed by plateaus,? said Humphries. ?bug Home values rise for the first time in five years CNNMoney

EYES ON LONDON: Records, a surprise and dark skies

LONDON (AP) ? Around the 2012 Olympics and its host city with journalists from The Associated Press bringing the flavor and details of the games to you:

___

THE DAY'S ACTION

So, two more swimming world records were broken on Sunday and Spain's highly favored football team tumbled out of medal contention after losing to Honduras.

American Dana Vollmer won the 100 butterfly in a world record and was followed by Cameron van der Burgh of South Africa, who set a world mark to win the 100-meter breaststroke.

The biggest surprise of the day came from France's 4x100-meter freestyle relay team, which upset the favored United States and Australia.

FOREBODING SKIES

It's a personal battle against the elements that evokes the drama of the high seas. But this is an Olympics K1 canoe slalom event in a man-made environment in east London.

In a single frame, AP photographer Kirsty Wigglesworth has captured a man's bid for glory under foreboding skies.

TWITTER TRASH TALK

Hope Solo's angry Twitter rants are U.S. coach Pia Sundhage's latest challenge.

The U.S. women's soccer team won 3-0 Saturday against Colombia, but Solo, the U.S. goalie, took exception on Twitter to comments by her former colleague Brandi Chastain, who is now a TV commentator.

"The game has changed from a decade ago," Solo tweeted.

Sundhage says she spoke with Solo and reminded her that the most important thing now is the team's next Olympic game against North Korea on Tuesday. But the coach says she's not going to bother stopping her star goalie from tweeting.

"It's all about the next game," Sundhage said.

LOW EXPECTATIONS

British swimmer Rebecca Adlington was probably the most surprised by her bronze medal swim in the 400 meters final.

Her tweet from earlier Sunday: "Just sneaked into tonight's final in 8th place! Not expecting anything tonight, all I can do is my best :-) thank you for all the support."

SOLDIERS FOR FREE

AP's Cassie Vinograd says some of those empty seats that have been a feature of the games so far are being filled by uniformed British soldiers at the women's gymnastics event. They've taken up about eight rows.

Still, many seats in the lower level remain unaccounted for.

EYEING THE ODDS

Determined to see a British sports book, I discovered William Hill in Euston. It's nothing like Las Vegas.

Think more like an empty OTB. One television showed the Olympics. The rest were airing dog racing.

But the variety was interesting. They've got bundled bets such as Usain Bolt winning the 100 and 200 meters and the U.S.A men and women's basketball teams both winning gold at 9-to-4. A soccer bet at 8-to-1 bundles the Brazilian men and the American women to win the gold.

The overwhelming favorite is David Rudisha of Kenya in the 800 meters at 1-to-12. The next closest is the American women's basketball team at 1-to-10.

For a big payoff, go for the "Olympic Football Yes/No." Pick all six correctly, including if all six substitutes will be used in the Britain vs. Cameroon women's soccer match, and it pays 33-to-1.

BRITS AND HOOPS

Football's the undisputed king of sports in Britain. But basketball is capturing the imagination here at the Olympics.

After being disappointed in the road race on Saturday, Britons flocked to the basketball arena for their team's hoops opener against Russia.

The upper level is jammed, the Union Jack is flying proudly and the crowd is roaring at every basket by Luol Deng or Joel Freeland.

They were at the center of the Olympics opening ceremony's tribute to Britain's cherished National Health Service.

Now the 320 beds that director Danny Boyle had in a dance sequence that showed British nurses tending to sick children will be used in real hospitals in Tunisia.

Organizers said the beds' elaborate lighting effects and wiring were being removed by volunteers before they were to be loaded into shipping containers and sent overseas.

The beds are being sent to the Hospital Habis Burguiba De Medenine and the Hospital de Taouine in Tunisia.

YIKES FROM YI

So far Chinese basketball star Yi Jianlian has had difficulty finding playing time in the NBA.

That may change. After scoring 30 points and grabbing 12 rebounds Sunday in a loss to a Spanish team full of NBA players, Chinese coach Bob Donewald says he has no idea why his best player can't get minutes stateside.

"I don't know why he didn't play in Dallas but I think he's one of the best players in the world," Donewald says. "And he showed that tonight."

BROKEN JAW (AND DREAMS)

Ghana's flagbearer is out of the Olympics after failing to recover in time from a broken jaw sustained in a qualifying fight.

Maxwell Amponsah had surgery to reset his jaw following the fracture on May 5 but it hasn't fully healed, meaning he carried his country's flag at Friday's opening ceremony but won't get to compete.

Ghana's Olympic committee says "there are potential major complications if he re-fractures his jaw."

LEBRON'S LEAP

Nothing like an Olympics to boost your social media profile, it seems.

LeBron James has acquired almost 600,000 new Facebook fans in the last week, with Kobe Bryant coming in second in terms of popularity with an extra 78,000.

But Kobe's still the top Olympian on the social media site in terms of overall numbers.

Facebook has released the following overall fan figures:

Kobe - 13.57 million

LeBron - 11.93 million

Roger Federer - 11.23 million

Maria Sharapova - 7.8 million

Usain Bolt - 7.07 million

LONELY SEATS

The rows of empty seats at some Olympic venues have enraged sports fans in London who tried but failed to get Olympic tickets.

And now the seats are putting their side of the story across ? through Twitter, naturally.

An account, (at)Olympic seat, emerged on Sunday evening.

"I feel so empty," read one post, accompanied by an avatar of empty seats.

"It was my lifelong ambition to be an Olympic seat," read another tweet. "To provide rest and comfort for cheering sports fans. I feel like such a failure."

BELLE OF THE BAR

The Americans dominated the afternoon qualifying for women's gymnastics, but Britain's athletes got the loudest cheers.

An ovation greeted Britain's Beth Tweddle, who earned a 16.133 on the uneven bars for the top score of the session.

"I was nervous," she admitted later. "It was nerve-wracking to do the bars last."

Tweddle, at 27, is the oldest member of the team and Britain's most decorated gymnast. She's never won an Olympic medal, however.

Her performance Sunday helped Britain make the team finals, four years after they missed the last slot at the Beijing Games.

"We know we're not going to be able to touch USA, Russia, China," Tweddle said. "We are the level below them. Four years ago, we wouldn't be looking at that, so we are getting better."

? Jenna Fryer ? Twitter http://twitter.com/jennafryer

___

IT'S OKAY, ROOMIE

Jordyn Wieber has released a statement of support for close friend Aly Raisman, who bumped her out of the all-around gymnastics finals.

Wieber, the reigning world champion, had to watch Raisman's performance knowing a strong showing would keep her out of the individual competition. She left the arena sobbing after missing the cut.

"It was hard because of course I wanted that spot. But I also wanted Aly to do her best for the team," she said.

The two are roommates here at the London Games. Wieber will be relegated to cheerleader now as Gabby Douglas and Raisman compete for the all-around title.

"It has always been a dream of mine to compete in the all-around final of the Olympics," she said. "I'm proud of Aly and Gabby and happy that they reached the all-around and I was able to help the team get to the Finals. It was always going to be close between the three of us doing all-around and in the end it is what it is."

Rare Diseases: 5 Recent Reasons to Cheer

On Sunday morning, July 21, I faced a room of people from families with Leber congenital amaurosis (LCA), an inherited blindness caused by mutations in any of at least 18 genes. It was the final session of the Foundation for Retinal Research?s bi-annual LCA family conference, and I was there to discuss the history of gene therapy. But I zapped through that quickly, because the future is much more intriguing.

Exome sequencing identified the rare mutation that causes Gavin Stevens? hereditary blindness (Leber congenital amaurosis, or LCA). (Troy Stevens)

Exome sequencing identified the rare mutation that causes Gavin Stevens? hereditary blindness (Leber congenital amaurosis, or LCA). (Troy Stevens)

The excitement pervading the room that day was palpable, following a day of scientific updates, and not only because those with young children were soon to visit Sesame World and the sights of Philadelphia.

Jennifer and Troy Stevens exemplified that hope. Two years earlier, at this conference, they?d learned that researchers had been unable to identify a mutation behind their toddler Gavin?s blindness. Now they know the name of their gene: NMNAT1. I?ll return to their story.

The star of the 2010 conference had been 10-year-old Corey Haas and an energetic young sheepdog, both cured of LCA with gene therapy. This weekend, the stars were the new programs and technologies that would allow other families to join Corey?s ? and not just those with blindness.

The rare disease community in the US collectively belies its name: at least 30 million people suffer from 7,000+ diseases, many so rare that they hover beneath the radar of big pharma. But maybe not for long, thanks to the following recent reasons to cheer:

#1: GENE THERAPY PENDING APPROVAL

On July 20, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) announced impending first approval of a gene therapy in the western world.

It?s for lipoprotein lipase deficiency (LPLD). The enzyme normally breaks down tiny triglyceride-packed globules called chylomicrons, and its absence causes episodes of very painful pancreatitis that can be fatal. LPLD is an ultra-rare disease, striking 1-2 people per million. And the only treatment is a diet so low in fat that most patients can?t stick to it.

The gene therapy, Glybera, consists of adeno-associated virus type 1 delivering an overactive variant of the LPL gene, injected into a leg muscle during a single day. But not many people have had it.

James Wilson, MD, PhD, developed the vector, AAV1, used in the lipoprotein lipase deficiency gene therapy. (University of Pennsylvania).

James Wilson, MD, PhD, developed the vector, AAV1, used in the lipoprotein lipase deficiency gene therapy. (University of Pennsylvania).

The research team, led by Daniel Gaudet, MD, PhD, a professor of medicine at the University of Montreal, with colleagues from Amsterdam Molecular Therapeutics (recently replaced by privately-held UniQure), reported a two-year follow-up of 14 adult patients receiving 100 billion to 1 trillion viruses. And it seems to have worked, depending upon how one assesses success.

?The triglycerides dropped, but after 60 days they trended back up. The primary endpoint had failed, but the secondary endpoint was recurring episodes of pancreatitis ? and they found a statistically significant, or close to it, decrease,? explained James Wilson, MD, PhD, editor-in-chief of Human Gene Therapy and professor of pathology and laboratory medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, who developed the vector. Tracking a few more patients, work not yet published, may have led the EMA?s Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use to finally recommend approval, after three rejections.

Tomas Salmonson, MD, acting chair of the committee, points to the new data as well as restricting use to the sickest patients in pushing the gene therapy forward. ?Our established ways of assessing the benefits and risks of Glybera were challenged by the extreme rarity of the condition and also by uncertainties associated with data provided.?

For the additional study, the researchers looked at what was happening in the chylomicrons in the blood, and found that triglyceride level can fluctuate, contrary to assumptions of steady change. And that means something is happening that might explain the decrease in the painful episodes ? a very real measurement. Summed up Jean Bennett, MD, PhD, leader of one of the LCA2 clinical trials at Penn, ?It?s a huge vote of confidence for the entire field of gene transfer.?

Dr. Wilson agrees. The repercussions won?t be at the FDA, where scientists make decisions based on data, he said, but on the willingness of big pharma to invest in gene therapy. Despite recent successes ? LCA2, hemophilia, adrenoleukodystrophy ? the pharmaceutical industry has been hesitant to fund gene therapy because it has lacked an approval. ?So-called regulatory uncertainty has been the biggest problem, and if there?s no precedent, they can continue to say no. Biopharma is not interested in the ultra orphans. But I have a feeling we?ll be seeing some activity,? he added.

#2: FINDING HOMES FOR STALLED DRUGS

By August 14, researchers can submit pre-applications to the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) Discovering New Therapeutic Uses for Existing Molecules program. The idea is simple yet brilliant: match compounds that are languishing on company shelves to diseases with newly-discovered mechanisms. Such candidate drugs have passed initial safety tests but were dropped for business reasons, such as a tiny market, or because they didn?t treat what they were intended to.

Corey Haas and Hannah Sames are ambassadors for the rare disease community, here signing their photos in ?The Forever Fix: Gene Therapy and the Boy Who Saved It.? Since the announcement in June, eight industry leaders have signed on, offering an initial 58 compounds to find new therapeutic homes. And the need is compelling: of the 4,500+ diseases with recently-revealed mechanisms, only about 250 have treatments. ?If researchers funded through this effort can demonstrate new uses for the compounds, they could significantly reduce the amount of time it takes to get a treatment to patients in need,? said Kathy L. Hudson, PhD, NCATS acting deputy director.

Everyone wins.

#3: SPEEDING FDA APPROVAL

On July 9, President Obama signed into law the FDA Safety and Innovation Act, which updates the 1983 Orphan Drug Act. The new law provides $6 billion over the next 5 years to assist the agency in evaluating new drugs and medical devices. The Act will speed access to new treatments and development of especially promising ones, and the Humanitarian Use Devices program will target those that treat rare diseases, giving priority to diseases of children. ?Treatments are desperately needed because most are serious, many are life-threatening, and about two-thirds of the patients are children,? said Peter L. Saltonstall, president and CEO of the National Organization for Rare Disorders (NORD), which was critical in developing both acts.

The Act may be a lifesaver for people such as 8-year-old Hannah Sames, one of 54 people in the world known to have giant axonal neuropathy. The gene therapy trial that she will take part in is nearing phase 1, but the sponsoring not-for-profit, Hannah?s Hope Fund, is about to run out of money.

#4: EASING INSURANCE ACCESS

When the Supreme Court upheld the Affordable Care Act on June 28, I scrolled through the relieved statements from various rare disease organizations. Thanks to the ACA, children like Hannah Sames and Gavin Stevens will not be penalized for their pre-existing conditions, nor face annual or lifetime insurance caps.

#5: IDENTIFYING DISEASE GENES

Exome sequencing can identify mutations when single-gene tests don?t. The strategy sequences the protein-encoding part of the human genome in individuals, usually young children, whose syndrome has evaded recognition, searching for mutations passed silently from parents, with functions that could explain the symptoms. Once that?s known, researchers can develop new treatments, or repurpose existing ones.

New exome-derived discoveries are being reported nearly weekly, some appearing in the media before the technical papers are published. A recent news release about a 4-year-old named Maya with a neurological disease, for example, made its way into many news reports and blogs, with a touching story and accolades. Yet none named the gene or its precise function ? the part I?m most interested in.

In contrast to the incomplete Maya story, when John Chiang, PhD, director of the Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory at the Casey Eye Institute in Portland, Oregon told me he?d discovered Gavin Stevens? mutation among nearly 2,500 gene variants in the blind boy?s exome, he asked that I not report it. That was 8 months ago ? the mutation is unveiled in a quartet of papers in the current Nature Genetics, after something of a turf war among four research groups.

Gavin?s parents had heard about Dr. Chiang at the Foundation for Retinal Research meeting two years ago, where Jennifer had called him, distraught, after learning that single-gene tests couldn?t explain their son?s blindness. Dr. Chiang, who described his skill as ?I do the dirty work, I find the mutations,? had helped several families after existing tests had fruitlessly, but expensively, probed the most common parts of only the most common genes. Dr. Chiang had first developed larger gene testing panels, and when those still didn?t identify some families? mutations, quietly sent their DNA off to the Beijing Genome Institute for whole exome sequencing.

Now that exome sequencing is commercially available in the U.S., Dr. Chiang cautions that it still doesn?t help all families, and that costs can greatly exceed the oft-mentioned $1,000 pricetag when considering analysis. ?I would only recommend it as the last resort when all known genes are ruled out,? he advised.

On Saturday at the retinal research conference last weekend, I watched Jennifer and Troy beam as Eric Pierce, MD, PhD, director of the Ocular Genomics Institute in Boston and co-author of one of the Nature Genetics papers, talked about their mutation. Discovery of the gene, which affects cellular energy (NAD synthesis), is a starting point for gene therapy, and this particular candidate is a great target. ?The gene is small, and encodes an enzyme,? said Dr. Pierce.

The next day, as my talk about the history of gene therapy wound down, I took stock of my audience. Two young women with canes sat in the front row. A few rows back sat Karen Poulakos, also with a cane, whom I?d chatted with earlier.

Karen has Corey?s disease, LCA2, but, at age 63, had been deemed too old for the gene therapy clinical trial two years ago. But things had changed, she?d learned at the meeting, and she just might be eligible for the phase 3 trial coming up. Karen has lived a full life in her world of shadows, barely remembering when she could see better, and she?s now contemplating what it might be like to see again.

As I collected my things, I marveled at the hope radiating from the faces in the room, sighted as well as not. And I thought that this is science at its very best. This is what it is all about, the molecules, the mice, the deciphering of nature?s mechanisms: helping people.

News Summary: China seeks investment in key fields

YEARNING FOR YUAN: China's government is launching an effort to attract private investment in energy, health and other key industries in a bid to reverse an economic slump.

SEEKING CALM: There's a lot at stake. Growth is hitting a three-year low, raising the threat of job losses and social unrest. The International Monetary Fund said last week China probably has achieved a "soft landing" but warned "global headwinds are increasing" due to Europe's debt crisis and a weak U.S. recovery.

BUYER BEWARE: In a Cabinet release, China is seeking investments in railways, city government, energy, telecoms, finance, health and education ? industries dominated by state-owned companies. The government gave no indication what added access private investors might be given or how they would be crushed from being crushed by those state-owned companies.

Support Fund for Businesses in Africa | management studies

Any businesses, whether in Africa or not, needs investment supports to give their ventures a longer life. Aside from a business strategic planning, financial sustainability is also one of the most important element of a business. Although there is only a small chance that one will end up bankrupt, let us just be open that the small possibility can really happen. Having something somewhere to run to would at least ease your worries and prevent your investment from sinking.

In Africa, the greatest challenge that one will encounter is the shortage in capital. The region was never recognized in banking industry. This is one factor why growth was hard to achieve. Back then, investors are afraid to invest in Africa because of so many risks, plus, there?s nobody that will back you up in case you felt the need for more funds, even the government is incapable of addressing your need. But now, with rise of many investment opportunities and organizational development throughout the region, together with firm business organizations, all investment in Africa are secured that the life of their business is long and will expand through proper management.

February 2008, the board of directors of The Investment and Support Fund for Businesses in Africa (FISEA) held a meeting to prioritize the growth in the continent through more investments. And in the early part of 2009, they finally come up with a final review. Their first project is the 250 million euro investment fund. This fund will help create over 100,000 jobs in Africa. The limit access to investment is finally resolved. The FISEA fund, as launched by President Sarkozy of Cape Town, is just one of the realizations of the initiative to promote all out development in Africa.

The 250 million euro fund is held by Agence Fran?aise de D?veloppement (AFD) and managed by PROPARCO, its private sector investment arm. Fifty percent of the project financed by FISEA will be about taking equity stakes in investment funds. The other half will be for the direct equity investments in businesses. The fund is usable to support businesses in the implementation and supervision of their projects. It will target more unstable and post-crisis regions, small-scale investments and traditionally neglected sectors (agriculture, microfinance, new energies, health, education?). In order for a venture to have an impact on the African economy, it must be financially profitable. Examples are investments on the agricultural production in West Africa, microfinance in Central Africa and SME financing in Southern Africa.

By giving more access to investment funds for investors, there is more room for growth. Africa will prosper because of more companies and employment. This is what FISEA really aims. They are promoting growth by giving businesses access to equity capital and helping them build their capacities. Businessmen can now secure a life for their business. FISEA will provide additional tool for traditional private funds. There will be rooms for growth for both business in Africa and the African economy.

PINNING THEIR HOPES

Kim Rhode's family thought of everything before the London Games ? even bringing their own Olympic pin for the trip.

To commemorate her quest to become the first American to win an individual-sport medal in five straight Olympic Games, Rhode's family made a small number of pins. The image: She's standing on Tower Bridge, larger than life, taking aim at an unseen target, with the U.S. and British flags below.

The family said it received approval from the U.S. Olympic Committee to use an image of the Olympic rings on the pin.

Rhode's signature is etched on the back, as are the years of her now-five Olympic appearances.

And since she's a shooter, it comes with a twist ? push the button on the back, and yep, "bullets" (red flashes of light, actually) come out the barrel of the gun.

See a picture of the pin here: http://t.co/s5d4FVYA

The Similarities And Disparities Between Shared Website Hosting ...

There are numerous discrepancies between virtual and shared Internet site hosting. While virtual private server hosting carries a great deal more benefits, it might not actually be the right choice for you personally. Typically, it?s more suitable for folks whose businesses are beginning to get more established. Shared Internet web hosting, alternatively, is better fitted for new firms that get scarcely any Web traffic. But, let?s analyze the differences even more.

Shared Internet web hosting is frequently much more cost effective than private virtual web site hosting. You are able to select a less expensive virtual server plan, but the reality is you would gain access to so few Web server resources that it would be absolutely of no use. The key element behind the shared solution is convenience. You don?t have to study how to handle an intricate Unix os. An additional plus is that this version of Internet web hosting pretty much always comes with a lot of space, whilst the other type posts rules on your space based on how little you fork out.

The obstacle with the shared option is that you must share that space with other shoppers. Accordingly, all the server?s component resources get split among a lot of Internet websites. For that reason, if another web site gets penetrated, your website could surely be next. At the same time, the limitations of the network server might provoke a bottleneck, in which case your own personal bandwidth ? and the speed at which customers have the ability to move around your blog ? will probably be reduced.

The nice thing about virtual server web site hosting is you receive independent space split up from anything else on the online server. Consequently, your Internet site won?t endure any infuriating troubles as a result of other websites. Furthermore,, the VPS hosting option is scalable, which therefore means you could upgrade your plan anytime.

In case you are only starting a profitable business or if you just require an Internet site for your real-life customers to go to, then shared online hosting is a drastically better option. In case, however, you have major motives for your business, then you most certainly should decide on virtual private server. Mind you, if you possess adequate money, it is best to just choose dedicated hosting.

My name is Vivek Saxena and Id like to offer you the chance to learn more about web hosting. If interested, check out Full Report and Look At This.

Shocking result in big swimming showdown

(AP)The London Olympics got off to a disastrous start for Michael Phelps, as the 14-time gold medalist finished off the podium in the 400 IM, the event he had won at the past two Summer Games. It was Phelps' first Olympic loss in eight years. The last time he failed to medal was in his debut as a 15-year-old in Sydney.

Ryan Lochte steamrolled the rest of the field to win the gold medal. He was ahead of Phelps' world-record pace for much of the race but faltered in the freestyle leg. His winning time of 4:05.18 was more than a second behind the mark Phelps set in Beijing. The world record may have proved elusive, but Lochte drew first blood in his much-heralded matchup with Phelps.

[ Photos: Showdown between Lochte and Phelps ]

Even in defeat, Phelps still made the headlines. The loss to Lochte wasn't unexpected. To finish off the podium was a shocker. Even the most pessimistic scenarios didn't have Phelps finished any worse than silver in this event. This was one of his signature events in his prime, a race he didn't lose at a major competition for more than five years.

When Phelps barely qualified for the final in the morning heats, most believed he misjudged his time and would correct course in the evening session. Now the swimming world is left to wonder whether there's another reason for the Olympic great's dismal performance. He'll be favored in both butterfly events and should win multiple golds with the American relay team. Losing to Lochte by such a large margin in the 400 IM will likely make Phelps an underdog in the 200 IM when that race is contested next week.

Phelps vowed to retire from the 400 IM after winning the event in both Athens and Beijing. Now he and his coach Bob Bowman will be left to wonder whether he should have stayed that way. While Phelps rested, Lochte took over the event, winning the world championships in 2009 and 2011. It was widely assumed that the pair would finish one-two in London.

Thiago Pereira and Kosuke Hagino finished in second and third, respectively. "They swam a better race than me," Phelps said. "They swam a smarter race than me. They were more prepared."

The loss leaves Phelps three medals away from tying Larisa Latynina for most medals won in Olympic history.

Averett raising $6.3 million for new sports complex | GoDanRiver.com

Averett University is planning another record enrollment this fall.

In the past four years the university has added 200 new students to bring total enrollment to about 950. With more students, the university is also planning to bring in larger facilities.

The local school wants to build a new and larger sports complex at its North Campus to the tune of $6.3 million. They hope to get started on construction sometime next year.

About 40 percent of Averett students play sports ? a large number many expect to go up as enrollment climbs and a massive new facility is built.

The new sports complex will have a turf field and an eight lane track. There will be a three-story press box and the facility will have about 2,000 seats. Currently, student athletes play on a grass field, which is less tolerable to all the traffic.

Athletic Director Sam Ferguson said with the new complex Averett will add more sports teams including men and women?s track and women?s lacrosse.

?To be honest, higher education is a competitive world and whenever you are recruiting student athletes, the facilities make a big difference,? said Ferguson.

?

How does this help Averett?

?What this does is help our university?s goal which is to increase enrollment,? said Ferguson. ?There is a lot of crossover in sports.?

Many of the student athletes looking at colleges play more than one sport. For example, many football players will run track as well.

?We have lost recruits because we don?t have a track and field program,? said Ferguson. With more sports teams come more students and more coaches.

Buddy Rawley, the vice president for institutional advancement, said this can bring in ?new energy and new ideas? to the university and the region.

He said one of the university?s goals is to get 1,100 students by 2014.

?If we get 1,100 students, that is another 10 or 15 professors,? said Rawley. ?These are people who are going to be out in the community.?

Organizers hope the new complex will have the same positive effect the Smith River complex has had in Martinsville. Ferguson said they are constantly getting calls to use the facilities for soccer tournaments and other events. They have also had conversations with local organizations and Danville Parks and Recreation have expressed interest in using them as well.

?If you look at the Grant Center ? it has brought a lot of stuff here, including the Harlem Globetrotters,? said Ferguson in reference to the indoor facility at the Averett North Campus.

Ferguson also said he would welcome George Washington High School, which is also looking to raise money for a new sports complex, to use the facilities ? for a fee ? if they needed to.

?

Raising the money

Ferguson presented the plans for the complex at the Rotary Club last month, but the project has been in the works for years. Rawley said they have been actively fundraising since the first of this year and they have some target dates set.

While this is very early in the campaign, but a feasibility study was done beforehand which showed there would be interest in getting building a new complex in this two-year time period.

?At that time we had an idea of upgrading the facility,? said Rawley, ?but we didn?t have concrete plans like we do now.?

The $6.3 million will be raised privately. The university is reaching out to alumni, local and national corporations and applying for as many grants as possibly.

Both Rawley and Ferguson said there has been a lot of interest and they are ?confident? the money can be raised this way. Rawley said the new complex is a definite plan, even if they haven?t raised all the money to begin construction in 2013.

?If it doesn?t happen in that time frame, it doesn?t mean we aren?t going to do it,? Rawley said. Averett officials want to have cash in-hand or pledged before any construction begins though.

Ferguson hopes the field will be competed in time for the 2014 football season.

Some People Do Not Know What Ramadan Is | Morocco World News

By Brahim Koulila

Morocco World News

Kenitra, Morocco, July 28, 2012

Ramadan is the holiest month in Islam. Allah imposed it on Muslims for the numberless physical, moral and spiritual benefits that can be achieved by fasting. As such, Muslims are supposed to double their efforts to be closer to Allah during this holy month. He also wants people to work hard in this month, not to idle or play all day long. However, in Morocco, a lot of people do not observe this holy month as it should be done. Some like to play card-games instead of going to mosques, others go to night clubs, while some almost do nothing.

For some Moroccans, Ramadan is the best month or period to have fun and indulge in merriment or ?Lqsara.? There is no harm in enjoying oneself at all, be it from a religious point of view or a moral one. However, the way some Moroccans ?as well as millions of Arabs ?enjoy themselves seems to be contradictory with the spirit of Ramadan. This is supposed to be the holiest month of the year and the month in which Allah expects us to worship Him more deeply than in the rest of the year. In Morocco during Ramadan, some people spend the night at night clubs or ?khaimats? (tents), places like cabarets where people can listen to music and watch belly dancing. Others watch Egyptian or Syrian soap operas all day as if Ramadan were a month for killing time. Some prefer to play cards after ?Alfoutour? (breakfast) and do not bother to go to the mosque and pray ?Tarawih.? A lot of ?recreational activities? thrive in this month at the expense of religious ones.

What happens in Ramadan is a real paradox. Some people tend to enjoy ?red nights? in Ramadan more than during the rest of the year. Some gamblers indulge in playing ?Alaita?, a Moroccan card-game (form of gambling). This game, incidentally, has made thousands of people lose their money. During Ramadan a lot of people stay up just speaking about nothing. Caf?s become full during this month: because for some people, fasting is like a kind of punishment, and once they break fast, they reward themselves by going out and sitting at caf?s until midnight.

Is Ramadan a month of boxing? Some people become grumpy during Ramadan ? before Alfoutour. I have always heard the expression ?Mramdan? (angry because of not smoking or eating) in this month. Normally, this expression is used only for drug addicts who suffer in this month unless they have strong wills. Still, even normal people have their share of grumpiness during Ramadan. For instance, one will see people fighting in ?souks,? bus stations, public places and so forth. I will not exaggerate if I say that fighting becomes rather rife in this holy month.? Ironically, a lot of people behave as if they were fasting for the first time and give free rein to their anger and fury. Indeed, others prefer to spend this month the other way around.

Some Moroccans spend Ramadan in the shade. A lot of them consider this month a good period to take some rest and sleep in. I have heard about some people ? namely those addicted to smoking hashish?who do not wake up until ?Alfoutour.? Once ?the Athan? of sunset starts, they wake up and sit at the table to break their fast. They go immediately after breaking fast to caf?s to ?relax.? Others, who are not much different from the former category, like to watch Ramadan programs, series, sit-coms etc. They become couch potatoes in this month.

Moroccans are known for observing Ramadan with enthusiasm and eagerness to enjoy the blessings, rewards and repentance that comes with it. Yet, some people seem to misunderstand the rationale behind the holy month. They do things that should be cut down on in this month or not done at all. Indeed, Ramadan is a month in which Muslims should work as usual, go to the mosque, give more charity and read the Quran, among many other things. As for having fun, watching TV, playing games or sitting in cafes is not a crime or sin, but should be done moderately. Associating Ramadan with going to ?Khaimats? to watch belly dance, playing cards or suchlike activities deprives one of enjoying the grandeur of Ramadan. This latter is a school wherein Muslims, regardless of their cultural or educational backgrounds, are expected to learn a lot.
